West of Nassau is historic Cable Beach. Original plans for a British Colonial pineapple plantation were dropped. Instead, this choice oceanfront real estateBreezes Bahamas -- five kilometres from Nassau, by a stretch of powdery sand -- on the capital's Cable Beach, became today's beach-blessed strip of world-class resorts. They evoke an ambiance of Waikiki, the French Riviera and Florida's super-trendy South Beach all rolled into one.

After Nassau, New Providence Island's most intensive infrastructure and recent landscape improvements have centred on "The Strip", as the Cable Beach area is known locally.

Cable Beach, sometimes called the Bahamian Riviera, is named after a Nassau-Florida submarine cable that came ashore in the area. It was the first effort to end Nassau's isolation and put the place in touch with the rest of the world via telephone.

The elegant Balmoral, with its picturesque off-shore Balmoral Isle, became the first Cable Beach luxury resort. It is now the Sandals Royal BahamianSandals Royal Bahamian, colonial-style hotel centred on a Georgian Manor House -- tucked quietly away at the secluded end of Cable Beach. Setting the scene for a combination of elegance and sophistication with Sandals' forte of sports and fun. . Sold by Government and turned into a private enterprise, The 'Royal B' won Best in the Caribbean honours as the finest all-inclusive resort in this part of the world.

Also transformed into a privately owned luxurious Cable Beach resort is SuperClubs Breezes. The all-inclusive resort was formerly the government-owned Ambassador Beach Hotel, once the venue of a Playboy Club.

Other world-class Cable Beach resorts include the Radisson Cable Beach Casino and Golf Resort, the Nassau Marriott Resort and Crystal Palace Casino and the well-established, smaller, and a touch quieter Forte Nassau Beach Hotel. Top-of-the-line timeshare resorts also are available. Cable Beach is more and more noted as a gastronomical happening with a wide range of Bahamian and international restaurants, including a Japanese steak house.
